You have got lots of extra bread in your house but don't know what to do with them. Make some delicious savory of 'Bread Butter Pudding' which is a treat to your sweet tooth. The bread butter pudding is a traditional British delicacy made out of buttered stale bread, raisins, an egg custard mixture with milk and flavored with vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. The best part of this dish is its yummy, yet easy to cook and any novice cook can pull it off. So here is the detailed recipe of my version of this dish, made with the French baguette.
Ingredients
Raisins (golden) : 60gms
Milk : 2.5+1 cups (should be lukewarm)
Sugar: 1/2+1/2 cup
Unsalted Butter (molten) : 25gms
Eggs : 2 whole and 2 yolks
Vanilla essence : few drops
Cinnamon powder : 1/3 teaspoon
Nutmeg Powder : one pinch
Procedure
Chop the baguette into thin slices.
Take a deep bottomed baking pan. Butter the surface of the pan nicely.
Place the bread slices in a circular pattern.
Apply the melted butter nicely on the bread pieces.
Sprinkle the raisins on top and between the bread pieces.
Break two eggs and whisk them nicely until the mixture atains a creamy texture.
Add 1/2 cup sugar and whisk it.
Add the vanilla essence.
Add the cinnamon powder.
Add the nutmeg powder.
Whisk the mixture nicely. Make sure everything has incorporated with each other.
Add 2.5 cups of milk to the mixture.
Whisk it gently.
Pour the mixture into the baking pan.
The mixture should submerge atleast 2/3 of the height of the bread pieces.
Place it in a preheated oven. I baked it at 180°C (356 F) for 15 minutes initially.
Preparing the custard mixture
Wisk the two egg yolks nicely.
Add the sugar (1/2 cup) and whisk it nicely until it attains a creamy texture.
Add 1 cup milk.
Add a drop of vanilla essence. Whisk nicely.
Take out the baking pan from the oven after the initial 15 minutes of baking. Pour the custard mixture on top.
Place it in the oven and bake it at 180°C (356 F) for 20-25 minutes until all the liquid have been absorbed by the bread pieces. Take it out from the oven and let it cool down. The pudding is ready.
It is best served when it has been refrigerated for at least two hours.
